Varsity Choir

Varsity Choir is our entry-level choir at Waconia High School. Membership consists primarily of 9th graders but all singers are welcome. Students in Varsity Choir are required to attend one vocal lesson with Mr. Olson per Trimester. In the Varsity choir we will primarily focus on:

1. Vocal Technique including: breathe support, vowel formation, and diction, phrasing and vocal freedom.
2. Music Literacy including: basic music theory and sight-reading.
3. Concert Preparation

Cantabile Women’s Choir

This is our advanced Women’s choir consisting of primarily 10th grader women. Students must be proficient in their musical literacy and have an advanced level of control over their instrument. An audition is required for membership in the Cantabile Choir. Students in Concert Choir are required to attend one vocal lesson with Mr. Olson per Trimester. Concert choir will focus on:

1. Vocal Technique including: breathe support, vowel formation, and diction, phrasing and vocal freedom.
2. Music Literacy including: basic music theory and sight-reading.
3. Choral Tone and Blend
4. Concert Preparation

Concert Choir

Concert Choir is the advanced vocal ensemble. This is an auditioned choir made up of primarily 11th and 12th graders and all 10th grade gentlemen. Cantabile membership requires an advanced level of musical literacy and command of the vocal instrument. Students can expect to be challenged Musically, Intellectually, and interpersonally through participation in Concert Choir. Students in Concert Choir are required to attend two sectional rehearsals per month. These sectionals are typically held at 7:15 am. The Cantabile Choir will focus on:

1. Vocal Technique including: breathe support, vowel formation, diction, phrasing, and vocal freedom.
2. Music Literacy including: advanced music theory and sight-reading, as well as melodic and rhythmic dictation.
3. Choral Tone and Blend
4. The preparation of challenging music
5. Concert, contest and festival Preparation

Select Chamber Choir

The select Chamber choir is the newest premier vocal ensemble at Waconia High School. The chamber choir's twenty-four singers are selected through audition and is open to all singers currently enrolled in one of the three curricular choirs offered during the school day. The Select Chamber Choir is known throughout the community by it's frequent holiday performances featuring traditional and contemporary carols. Following the Holiday season the choir sings a mixture of contemporary a cappela, jazz and traditional chamber music. The choir rehearses on Tuesday afternoons from 3:00-5:00 PM. The Select Chamber Choir will focus on:

1. Vocal Technique including: breathe support, vowel formation, and diction, phrasing and vocal freedom.
2. Advanced Music Literacy including: advanced music theory and sight-reading, as well as melodic and rhythmic dictation.
3. Choral Tone and Blend
4. The preparation of challenging music
5. Concert, contest and festival Preparation
6. Preparation for tour and collaboration with the Wind Ensemble
