2007 Judges

Antwon Chavis

Antwon Chavis is a freelance show choir choreographer based in Cleveland, Ohio. He has studied dance for the past 20 years, and in that time he has become well rounded in the areas of tap, jazz, hip hop, commercial funk, swing, ballroom and a great deal more. Antwon has also had the opportunity to work with many nationally renown professionals including: Darrin Henson (Choreographer for NSync), Chet Walker (Choreographer for Annie Get Your Gun and Fosse), Barry Lather (Staging for Brian Boitano), Chris Judd (Choreographer for Jennifer Lopez), and various others.
Antwon currently choreographs and designs shows for mixed, unisex and middle school show choirs in the states of Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia. In four years time, his groups have won a total of 31 Best Choreography Awards, in addition many groups have won Grand Champion or placed in the top six, at numerous competitions including the Sioux City East, Mt. Zion Invitational, North Central Music in the City, Findlay Findlay Fest, Watseka Show Choir Invitational, Benton Invitational, Mooresville Spotlighter Invitational, Center Grove Best in the Midwest, Southmont Invitational, Twinsburg Northcoast Invitational, Showstoppers Orlando and various others.
Antwon is also founder of the show based consulting company Foundation Show Design and Co-creator of the annual Finale Show Choir Invitational and Performing Arts Seminar held in Cleveland, Ohio.

Tina Thielen-Gaffey

Tina Thielen-Gaffey is an Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and has recently completed her doctoral coursework in the Choral Conducting program at the University of Iowa. At UMD, she conducts Concert Chorale, two Vocal Jazz Ensembles (Lake Effect and Chill Factor), teaches elementary music, aural skills, and applied voice. A mezzo-soprano, she completed the M.M. degree in Choral Conducting at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI and her B.M. in music education at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Prior to her studies in Michigan, the Wisconsin native taught for eight years in the public schools of her home state, where she was responsible for choral ensembles, band ensembles, vocal jazz and show choirs, musicals, madrigals and madrigal feasts, festivals, and touring. At WMU, Ms.Thielen-Gaffey soloed with the Treble Chorus, University Chorale, Opera Workshop, and the award winning vocal jazz ensemble, Gold Company. Ms. Thielen-Gaffey is a past president of WMU's student chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. At the 2003 and 1999 national conventions of that organization, she was a national finalist in the graduate student conducting competition.

Michelle Jensen

Michelle is a choral director, clinician, and teacher. Currently directing the Chamber Singers and teaching in the area of Music Education at Azusa Pacific University, she has also served as an adjunct instructor at the University
of Southern California where she earned both her BM and MME and is currently pursuing a DMA in Choral Music. Michelle is a member of both SAG and AFTRA with an extensive performance resume including commercials, voice-overs, music videos, guest-star roles on television and live performances. Michelle continues to serve as a clinician, adjudicator, honor choir conductor, choreographer, and guest artist throughout the United States and abroad.

Brett Carroll

Brett Carroll is currently the director of vocal music at Burbank High School in Burbank,
CA. He has produced, conducted, and recorded music for such well known companies as Ford Motor Company, General Foods Inc., Dow Chemical Corp., and the Unocal 76 Oil Corporation. Mr. Carroll has been a writer and musical director for several entertainment production companies where he was a producer and director for regional and national productions. His soundtracks for live productions have been heard accompanying singers from Asia to Europe and even at the White House Easter Egg Roll!
Mr. Carroll is an avid educator and has been a clinician for several state school music organizations; including the Illinois Music Educator’s Association. Recently, Mr. Carroll was guest conductor/clinician of an Illinois Music Educator’s Association Honors Chorus comprised of 240 auditioned singers and was a guest lecturer
for the Midwest Conference on School Vocal and Instrumental Music at the University of Michigan.
Mr. Carroll moved to Burbank last year after 6 successful years at Mundelein High School in the Chicago
area. At Mundelein High School, his show choirs, concert choirs, and vocal jazz ensembles were awarded multiple perfect scores at IHSA State competitions and were state finalists 5 out of 6 years. As a sought after designer and choreographer for nationally competitive high school show choirs in the Midwest, Mr. Carroll has won multiple awards for choreography and show design. While pursuing his music education degree, Mr. Carroll was the Associate Conductor of the Oakland Chorale and Chorus at Oakland University. Mr. Carroll studied Commercial Music at Millikin
University, Music Education at Oakland University, and graduate Choral Conducting at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois . He is currently the director of music at St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church in Chatsworth, California.

Terry Voss

Terry Voss has been a choral director for 27 years. He has held positions in Augusta, Wisconsin, Algona, Iowa and is currently in his 17th year at Totino-Grace High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mr. Voss directs 5 of the 8 choirs at Totino-Grace including the 100 voice Concert Choir, Mixed Choir, Chamber Singers and Men’s Chorus. He is the director of the varsity show choir Company of Singers, one of three show choirs at Totino-Grace. Company of Singers has been pleased to place consistently in finals for the past 8 years.
Mr. Voss is also a private voice instructor and also teaches two levels of music theory. Several years ago he began a community junior high show choir program that meets for three sessions a year.
Mr. Voss’s choirs have toured and performed in Poland, Austria, California, Florida, Texas, Puerto Rico and New York City. This year Company of Singers will compete in the national competition in Nashville. Company of Singers has also performed this season
at Orchestra hall in Minneapolis where they opened for Tonic SolFa. They were also the featured performance ensemble last summer at the Minnesota State Choral Directors Convention. Some past students of his are currently performing professionally in opera companies, amusement parks, on national musical tours and Broadway, both in the U.S. and U.K.
Mr. Voss has his BME from Viterbo University in La Crosse. WI and Masters in Music
from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He is currently a member of ACDA, MENC, MMEA and has held state offices in Iowa and Minnesota, was the Repertoire and Standards Chair for Show Choir in Minnesota and is currently on the executive board as the East Metro Representative for the Minnesota ACDA. Mr. Voss has been recognized as an Outstanding LaSallian Teacher at Totino-Grace High School and he is in demand as a judge and clinician throughout the Midwest.
Mr. Voss resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota with his wife, also a music teacher and private voice instructor - both his son and daughter attend college in Chicago.
